<title>BSNL spins web of lies to save Raja</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/OMOYYVxP3rQ/sid=701.html</link>
<description>The BSNL is cooking up one lie after another to save its ‘political’ master, who reportedly arm-twisted the officials in granting WiMax franchise to a non-existent company.

First, the BSNL claimed that the franchisee short-listed for running WiMax operation in Chennai, West Bengal and Haryana and Himachal Pradesh was one Ampules (company). The news was widely reported in the media. When The Pioneer carried a report on Wednesday that this was a non-existent company, the BSNL came with a rejoinder, identifying the short-listed firm as Ampoules &amp; Auto Private Limited of Kolkata.

In its rejoinder to The Pioneer, the BSNL’s Chennai unit said, “The company M/s Ampoules &amp; Auto Private Limited, Kolkata, who has participated in the said tender is a registered firm under the Registrar of Companies, Government of India.” The signatory of the letter is AGM (Admn &amp; Legal) of BSNL, Chennai unit.

A cursory look at the online registry of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs shows that Ampoules &amp; Auto Private Limited is not registered as a company with any of the Registrars of Companies.

R-Com to sell part of optic fibre capacity

Mumbai, Dec. 14: Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications is planning to sell a part of its optic fibre capacity on its FLAG network to global broadband users.

Put simply, the company plans to sell “an asset within an asset” while retaining ownership of the world’s largest private undersea cable.

“The cable is made up of millions of fibre pairs and Reliance Communications is considering selling some of those to large broadband users,” said sources.

The FLAG network — or Fibre-optic Loop Around the Globe — owned by Reliance Communications overseas arm Reliance Globalcom covers 65,000 kilometres and is integrated with the company’s domestic optic fibre network.

  <title>Finland: Broadband Is a Legal Right</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/EJpCPTd2WzQ/sid=696.html</link>
<description>Come July 2010, every Fin will have access to a 1 Megabit-per-second broadband connection. Finland just became the first country in the world to sign a law that provides every citizen of the country with a legal right to a broadband connection.

The Finnish government had already announced that every citizen should have access to a 100 Megabit-per-second broadband connection by the end of 2015. Now, it took an intermediary step toward that goal. On Oct. 14, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announced that every Fin should have a legal right to a 1 Megabit-per-second connection by next summer.

The move could pave the way for other countries to start looking at broadband as its citizens’ inalienable legal right, akin to freedom of speech and freedom of movement. That makes a lot of sense: Most of us can no longer perform our work duties, do homework or communicate with friends without having access to the Internet. Many Web-based communications and video services, such as Skype, require a broadband connection to work. People need broadband connections to live normal lives, as Finland is the first nation to acknowledge.

  <title>Google has acquired reCAPTCHA</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/K3euXHJOKWs/sid=695.html</link>
<description>Google has acquired reCAPTCHA, a company that provides CAPTCHAs to help protect websites from spam and fraud.

	Quote:

Since computers have trouble reading squiggly words like these, CAPTCHAs are designed to allow humans in but prevent malicious programs from scalping tickets or obtain millions of email accounts for spamming. But there’s a twist — the words in many of the CAPTCHAs provided by reCAPTCHA come from scanned archival newspapers and old books. Computers find it hard to recognize these words because the ink and paper have degraded over time, but by typing them in as a CAPTCHA, crowds teach computers to read the scanned text.

In this way, reCAPTCHA’s unique technology improves the process that converts scanned images into plain text, known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This technology also powers large scale text scanning projects like Google Books and Google News Archive Search. Having the text version of documents is important because plain text can be searched, easily rendered on mobile devices and displayed to visually impaired users. So we'll be applying the technology within Google not only to increase fraud and spam protection for Google products but also to improve our books and newspaper scanning process.

  <title>IBM Throws Out Microsoft Office</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/8LY_K1tIf5I/sid=692.html</link>
<description>360.000 IBM workers have been told to stop using Microsoft Office and switch to the Open Office-based software Symphony.

	Quote:

Quoting an inside source, the German economic newspaper, “Handelsblatt” reports that staff at IBM have been given ten days to change to Symphony, IBM's in-house Lotus software. The use of Microsoft Office will in future require managerial approval. With immediate affect, the Open Document Format (ODF) will rule at IBM with the file ending .doc soon belonging to the past.

Lotus Symphony is an office software that incorporates huge chunks of customized Open Office without a databank module. The free software download provided by IBM is an attempt at luring customers away from Microsoft. IBM's cooperation with Linux distributors like Red Hat, Canonical and Novell was designed to strengthen the software's market chances.
