<title>BSNL searching for pvt partners for Internet Data Centres</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/uAfrYQWJ4_E/sid=684.html</link>
  <description>Quote:

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has invited bids from private players to set up Internet Data Centres (IDCs) in various parts of the country on a revenue sharing basis.

The centres are expected to be set up over the next six months after which the PSU will go for outsourcing contracts for services such as Web hosting, co-location, data warehousing and Internet managed services.

A data centre is a facility where customer can outsource the management and day-to-day operations of their Web sites or other IP connected applications. Customers can purchase the server hardware, rack space, bandwidth and network equipment. In addition, customers get a secure place to physically house their equipment with regulated power, dedicated Internet connection, security, and fire detection equipment.

  <title>ISP's unhappy with TRAI norms</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/RVa0Q3R4qHU/sid=679.html</link>
<description>Standalone Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and some telcos have opposed TRAI's plans to introduce regulations to ensure that ISPs provide internet connections to only based only on the capacity of traffic they can carry.

The number of high-speed Internet connections an ISP can support depends on the bandwidth availability. The regulator had proposed to introduce norms that would specify the ratio between the number of customers per unit bandwidth which is known as contention ratio. As per international practices, the average contention ratio for a home user package is 50:1 and that for business package is 20:1.

TRAI has said that most ISPs compromise on quality by accommodating a higher number of subscribers bringing down broadband speeds and congesting networks. The regulator had mooted this move as it had been flooded with complaints that broadband/dial-up speeds were almost always lower than those promised by the operators.

<title>Govt permits subscribers to choose cheapest STD/ISD tariffs</title>
  <link>http://feeds.vinuthomas.com/~r/vinuthomascom/~3/MXWC1WO-sGc/sid=678.html</link>
  <description>Quote:

Subscribers now have the freedom to choose their carrier for making long-distance calls, whether domestic (STD) or international (ISD) as they can buy calling cards from the operator who provides the lowest tariffs. This will usher in new competition in long-distance calls. More importantly, the move will also challenge the dominance of all existing telecom operators as it will allow all players who carry long distance calls to sell the consumers.

This is how the concept of calling cards will work. Suppose you are a Bharti Airtel subscriber, but you find that BSNL or Reliance Communications (RCOM) offers the cheapest long-distance tariffs.

You can buy a pre-paid long distance package from BSNL or RCOM for a particular time period. You then punch in a set of numbers specified in the package to get onto the BSNL or RCOM network and make your calls. You can talk for as long as your pre-paid package permits. Similarly, a Bharti or a Vodafone customer can also buy calling cards from companies such as Powergrid, Tulip IT and Idea cellular amongst others.

There is more choice in the offing -- you can now buy long distance calling cards from all players who offer these services including foreign operators such as such as British Telecom, AT&amp;T, Verizon, France Telecom and Cable &amp; Wireless. Therefore, if an AT&amp;T were to offer you a rates at say Rs 2 per minute to the US. compared to the average rate of Rs 6-9 per minute at present), you can junk your operators and use the American telco's services.

Kerala's major cities all set to become wi-fi

KOCHI: Kerala's major cities are all set to become wi-fi with the BSNL’s WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) service getting ready to be launched by the end of March, enabling access to internet anywhere.

This will enable the customers to use internet at a speed of 2 mbps anywhere in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Thrissur districts.

BSNL has completed a survey and adopted a plan of action for providing the service.

The study of radio waves and various frequencies has been completed.

The results are encouraging and the entire state will be wi-fi soon.

The city limits of the four districts will be covered first.

Later it will be extended to other parts of the districts.

Corporate offices and people who are travelling will benefit the most since the users can do away with cabling for accessing the internet.

BSNL Ernakulam principal general manager M Haridas said that the initial benefits are for those who want to use internet while travelling.

There is no need for a modem and any computer which has the facility for accessing the wi-fi can use the new facility.

The WiMax system will be installed in all the BSNL mobile towers so that the wi-fi service will be available in all the parts of the state which have mobile connectivity.

According to Haridas, the existing users and the new customers can avail themselves of the facility as technology for broadband now used by the BSNL customers and wi-fi is different. The BSNL is yet to come out with the tariffs for the wi-fi system.

However, there will be pre-paid and post-paid options for the customers.

At present, the BSNL broadband is available for those having land phone connection or USP portal.

With the introduction of the new facility, customers can access the internet without a land phone connection or USP portal.

Almost 30 times faster than 3G, the WiMax can support data speeds of up to 70 mbps, against 3G’s 380 kbps to 2 mbps.
